How to use the GPS Clock

The Global positioning System (GPS) is a US military system primarily intended for global navigation. The system provides highly accurate positioning information for navigation. Typically, a GPS receiver can provide timing information to within a few nanoseconds of UTC. The accuracy achieved with a GPS receiver is generally more than required for most computer network timing applications.

GPS Receiver Output

The GPS receiver constantly outputs position and timing information. Generally, information is transmitted to and from the receiver via a RS232 serial interface. Standard GPS interface protocols exist, the most common being NMEA. The NMEA protocol consists of a number of sentences, or character strings, transmitted at 4800 bits per second. Contained within each character string is accurate time and position information. Due to the latencies involved in serial communication, the NMEA sentences are not generally accurate enough to provide a timing reference. Therefore a pulse per second (PPS) output is utilised. A PPS output is an accurate pulse output each second that is aligned to the start of each second. The PPS output can be fed into a control line on the RS232 interface to provide a hardware interrupt input for accurate timing. Often the DCD RS232 line is utilised as a PPS input from the GPS receiver. The PPS output combined with NMEA timing and positioning information provides a highly accurate timing reference for computers.

GPS Antennas

The GPS antenna is a signal amplifier that boosts the GPS signal for transmission along a cable, usually coax, to the receiver. GPS antennas used for timing purposes are generally dome-shaped pole mounting devices for permanent installation in a static location. Typically, the GPS antenna is fairly small in size, measuring less than 900 mm in diameter

GPS Cabling

The cable distance that can be utilised by a GPS antenna and receiver depends on the amplification of the GPS antenna and the quality of coax used in the installation. A typical GPS antenna may have a gain of 35 db. Low-quality coax such as RG58 has an attenuation of 0.64 db/m at 1575 MHz. Therefore, a cable run of 55m can be obtained using RG58 cable. How To Understand Your Computer's Random Access Memory

The System Memory is more commonly called RAM or Random Access Memory. This is the memory used by the computer to hold programs and data.

RAM chips are large rectangular shaped and made with memory cells with support logic that reads and writes data. These chips must be continously refreshed, that is, data is constantly sent to allow the cells to hold data.

Information being transferred between the CPU Chip and RAM memory is called a memory cycle. During the late 90s, the DIMM chip was the standard RAM Chip. So just what is this DIMM chip? Let's talk about the different Ram memory chips used in the computer.

Static RAM is a type of RAM that holds its data without being refreshed, for as long as power is supplied to the circuit. This is contrasted to dynamic RAM (DRAM), which must be refreshed many times per second in order to hold its data contents.

TYPES OF RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY CHIPS

SIMM or Single Inline Memory Modules came on the scene in the early 90s. The SIMM chips first came with 30 pins. And then the 72 pin SIMM which had 32 bit data paths or buses.

DIMM or Dual Inline Memory Module replace the Simm chips. These chips had 168 pins as compared to the 72 pin Simm variety. The data bus of the 30 pin chip was 8 bits while the 72 data bus can send data on the 32 bit data bus.

DIMMs also come in a smaller form factors suitable for use in notebook computers. These SO DIMMs or Small Outline DIMMs are available in both 32-bit wide/72-pin and 64-bit wide/144-pin form factors.

RIMM came in 1999 and the connectors for this new chip fits in the same sockets as the DIMM chips. They have 184 pins as compared to the Dimm which have 168 pins

The RIMM chip was to come along when DRDRAM OR Direct Rambus DRAM: a totally new RAM architecture, was introduced. A single Rambus Channel has the potential to reach 500 MBps in burst mode; a 20- fold increase over DRAM.

Computers will have DRAM for their main system memory, instead of SRAM, even though DRAMs are slower than SRAM. The reason that DRAMs are used is that they are cheaper and take up much less space. To build a 64 MB core memory from SRAMs would be very expensive

How to Publish Google Calendar and Sub-Calendars to Your Website

Google calendar is slick. I love this thing. I have overlayed 4 sub-calendars and now I can see them all in one place. The sub-calendars retain their individuality because they are color coded. If you want a super cheap, as in free, calendar for your business, church, or other group then this is a great solution. But, when Google calendar initially came out, there was no built-in way to publish your calendar to HTML. That was a real bummer. You usually create these types of calendars to share them with others.

Since that time, Google has made HTML versions of calendars available. That has been great. To get an HTML version of your calendar, go to "Manage Calendars" and then click on your calendar name, you will now find an HTML button to publish your calendar. Now, click on the "configuration tool" to get the HTML to copy to your webpage. The easiest solution to get this onto your web site is to make a link. Simply copy the HTML that Google provided and copy it into a link.

After you start playing around with Google calendar, you will notice its power. The first thing I did was add multiple sub-calendars. I love this feature because it allows me to see multiple calendars while retaining their individual identity. The events are all color-coded based on which calendar the event belongs to. Folks who are used to color coding event types may find this annoying and confusing. I like it. The next thing I noticed is that the HTML calendar doesn't pass sub-calendars to the calendar view. I really wanted to get that. After rooting around, this is how I fixed that. Cal Man, a Google employee, told me to insert multiple src lines in the iframe. Before I go on, you need to know that I am dropping the HTML brackets in these examples. That is a limitation in the way these articles get published. So, consult the Google configuration for the exact syntax. So, let say that your code has src="http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=googlecalendarname&height=614" style=" border-width:0 " width="640" frameborder="0" height="614" What you need to do is get the html for the sub-calendar and place the src (after the embed?, not the first src!) next to your current calendar. The end result should look somewhat like this: src="http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=googlecalendarname&src=anothergooglename&height=614" style=" border-width:0 " width="640" frameborder="0" height="614" There you have it. Now you can share your google calendar with the world! And, you can add as many sub-calendars as you want.

Just remember that you have made your calendar publicly available. If you don't want others to see it, you should not do it this way. HOW TO PROTECT PEOPLE STEALING MONEY FROM YOUR E-GOLD ACCOUNT

The biggest problem with e-gold is that if somebody steals funds from your account, it is almost impossible to recover them! I'll list some of the least obvious tips first because I hope that veteran computer users will realize early in the article that they might not have done everything they could do. Major users of e-gold are people involved in the Autosurf / HYIP industry so I've written this article with them in mind. If you use e-gold for other reasons this article is still highly relevant.

Tip # 1: DON’T TRUST ANY AUTOSURF / HYIP OWNERS!

Nowadays there are many fly-by-night autosurfs, and many of you will no doubt put a few dollars into them. Unfortunately it is extremely easy for anybody to set up an autosurf or HYIP company, to get a few dollars in from excited new members and then vanish. This article isn't about how to select autosurf sites that are credible but I want you to be aware that when you join any autosurf you are giving the webmaster your email address, e-gold number and a password to login with.

ALWAYS use a unique email address for every autosurf you join with. If you don't, then a dishonest autosurf webmaster might see if your username and password are useable in other autosurfs, they might test it out with your e-gold account, or maybe they might try to get into your emails, eBay or amazon.com account.

Tip # 2: DON’T TRUST INTERNET EXPLORER OR ANY VIRUS CHECKER!

I’ve got nothing against the software itself. Internet Explorer might be the best program in the world but the problem lies with it being the most popular. This means that every thief who tries to attack your computer will be trying to find weaknesses in Internet Explorer’s security. Firefox is an alternative web browser and not only is it less open to virus attacks but it is also a very reliable and feature-packed program.

Any page you view when autosurfing may contain a virus or similar. If you are like me, you probably view the first sites in the rotation and then leave your computer to surf without you. Imagine the damage this could do if one or more viruses infects your computer during this time.

Virus checkers give people a false sense of security. Certainly they have a lot of uses but it is still possible that you will get a virus that is not recognized by the checkers. Sometimes programs that record your keystrokes aren’t technically viruses and they may slip through the net.

Despite my warnings about virus checkers it is still a very good idea to have one. Do regular scans and try to have the virus checker turned on at all times. Just don’t fall in to the trap of assuming you can never have a problem because you have a virus checker already.

Tip # 3: USE COMPLEX PASSWORDS

Unless you are a high profile celebrity or government high-flyer it’s not likely that a determined group of thieves will take much time to guess your password. That said, it’s no extra effort to make your password a little more complicated.

Don’t use a complete word as a password. Force yourself to use a password with both numbers and letters in it. The practice of this will mean that your password will be harder for somebody to guess. Make sure you avoid the most obvious passwords of your pet names, mother’s maiden name or company name.

Tip # 4: USE DIFFERENT PASSWORDS

It’s not possible to know who lies behind every website you visit. I know of a number of instances where a person has set up a website as a way of collecting usernames and passwords from its members and then trying the same usernames and passwords in popular websites such as eBay, PayPal and Hotmail.

One clever method that I’ve found is to create a formula that can create a different but easy-to-remember password for every site I visit. You could create a simple formula like this.:

abc + [number of letters in the websites name] +[last 2 letters of the websites name] + XYZ

so if we used this formula for Hotmail PayPal and eBay we’d have these passwords:

abc7ilXYZ for hotmail abc6alXYZ for paypal abc4ayXYZ for eBay

If you have a secret formula just for you, then you will always be able to work out what password you have used for every website. Anybody who sees the one password you use on a site will not be able to guess how the formula works elsewhere.

Tip # 5: AVOID ENTERING PASSWORDS FROM YOUR KEYBOARD

This is the mistake Paul made. Without knowing it, and without the virus checkers spotting it Paul had a ‘keylogger’ program hidden on his computer. Every key press Paul made was recorded and sent to the thief. When he entered his username and password for Gmail, the thief was alerted to it immediately.

So how is it possible to stop this happening?

There are a few options for you here:

You can install a ‘Password Manager’ Program for your computer. The two best programs are AI Roboform (for the PC) and 1Passwd (for the Apple Mac). What these programs do is they store your passwords securely and paste them into your web browser when you need to. Both program are also excellent for storing your personal information and for filling in all manner of online forms. AI Roboform is extremely useful when traveling as it can be stored securely on a USB drive and used securely from internet cafes and shared computers.

If you need to type the password in then enter the letters in the wrong order. To do this lets assume your password is 123456 ( a stupid password for sure, but its good for this example). First we just enter ‘234’ in the ‘password box’. Using your mouse, click back to the beginning of the field and type in ‘1’ and finally click to the end of the field with your mouse and enter ‘56’. The reason for doing this is because if a secret program is recording your key presses it will not know that you have used your mouse to enter letters in the wrong order. The keylogger will get a record of you entering ‘234156’ which is obviously far from what your password is.

Tip # 6 DON’T KEEP YOUR WELCOME EMAILS ONLINE

This tip would have saved my friend Paul a lot of headaches. He used Gmail and every time he joined a new website he’d receive an email which welcomed him to the site and reminded him of his username and password. Paul kept all of these emails in his Gmail account for reference. When the thief managed to get Paul’s Gmail password he must have been delighted to find all that information. He certainly made a lot of use out of it.

If you receive these kinds of emails, (and you probably do) get them off the internet! Print them out and store them in your safe, or use AI Roboform or 1Passwd to keep them securely stored on your computer. I hope that this article has been of value to you. Check to be sure it has been pushed all the way in the slot for a solid connection.Secure the card to the case with the screw you saved from the cover plate earlier.

Check and double check your installation process before replacing the cover onto the system unit case.With the cover replaced,reconnect peripherals and turn on the computer.

The operating system should detect the new video card and install the device driver software that will allow the card to talk to the computer.A cdrom should have come with the new card with the device drivers and other useful software.

And you should now be able to experience the ultimate in crisp,clear quality graphics on your monitor.Its that easy to install and setup your video card.

The new PCI Express technology comes with some other benefits as well. For one, the amount of trace routes on motherboards are reduced by the circuitry of motherboards. How To Properly Install A New Sound Card

Sound Card installation is indeed simple and rather straight forward,that is,when you know how to do it. Opening the system unit can be a scary task for some of us,especially if we have not performed this task before.

The key is to be calm,take your time,and make it fun. Look forward to looking inside the computer and see just how many components you can readily identify.

Remember to touch a doorknob or any grounded metal object to remove static electricity from your body.To install your new sound card,let's perform the following.

OPEN THE SYSTEM UNIT

Remove the system unit cover and locate an empty expansion bay.Note that the rear cover of the slot may have to be removed on most computers.Before touching anything,ground yourself to remove any buildup of elecrtical static charge from yourself. Touching the computer case or a boorknob will do the job.

With the cover removed from the system unit,lay the computer on its side.You may have to remove other connections or devices to have clear access to the empty card bay.

Take notes of any devices or connections that you make so that you can refer to them during installation of the new card.

New sound cards must be installed in the PCI slot. After removing the small rear cover,remove the new card from its protective wrap.This wrap is intended to keep the card away from electrical static charge.

INSTALLING THE SOUND CARD

Grasp the card and align it with the PCI slot. Slowly but firmly press the new card completely in the PCI slot.Check to be sure no part of the yellow contacts can be seen when the card is pushed in.

Secure the sound card to the system unit by using the screw that you removed when removing the rear cover.Use this screw to secure the card to the case.

If you have on sound installed on the motherboard and you want to install another card,most systems will disable the motherboard integrated sound.If not, consult your computer manual to find the correct jumpers to disable the motherboard sound.

Now the cdrom audio cable must be connected. Insert one end of the audio cable for the cdrom or dvd drive into the CD-IN socket of the sound card. The other end is inserted into the audio-out socket of the cdrom or dvd drive.

Check and double check all connections before you replace the system unit cover.If all connections are good,replace the cover and reboot the system after all peripherals are reconnected.

REPLACE THE SYSTEM UNIT COVER

The computer should automatically detect the new card and attempt to install the device drivers needed to communicate with the card.Windows should prompt you to install the software needed to allow the card to communicate to the computer.

The new card should have come with a cdrom with device drivers and other software for the card.Simply inserted the cdrom in the cdrom drive and select the cdrom installation when prompted.

Test the new sound card by re-booting the computer. You should hear the Windows startup sound if the card is operational.In some cases,the new card will be operational without rebooting your computer.

Installing or upgrading your sound card is that easy. You will need a quality speaker system to take full advantage of your new sound card.Get a speaker system with a super woofer for maximum sound quality.

How To Maintain Accurate Time On Your PC

PC's have internal real time clocks designed to maintain system time. The internal clocks rely on relatively low-cost crystal oscillators, which are notoriously inaccurate. In many cases PC system time can drift by several minutes each day. This article describes various methods of maintaining a highly accurate time on your PC. It describes how to utilise Internet time references, radio and GPS clocks and dedicated NTP server systems.

Internet Time References

The Internet utilises the Network Time Protocol to distribute accurate time information to network time clients. NTP has been an important part of the Internet for over 25 years. The protocol was born through the need to provide synchronisation of time critical processes across the Internet.

Most modern operating systems, including Windows XP, 2003 and LINUX have the ability to synchronise time with a NTP Server. There are a host of Internet based NTP Servers with public access that can be used to synchronise your PC. Below is a list of popular Internet based public access NTP Server references:

time.nist.gov - US based time reference.
ptbtime1.ptb.de - German time reference.
ntp.my-inbox.co.uk - UK time reference.
canon.inria.fr - French time reference.
clock.isc.org - Canadian time reference.

Windows XP has pre-installed SNTP client software that can synchronise time with a NTP server. This is achieved by simply entering the domain name of an Internet NTP Server in the time properties tab. The host computer will then periodically contact the NTP Server and synchronise the system time to the specified reference.

LINUX and UNIX systems have the NTP software distribution available from the NTP website, ntp.org. The NTP application runs as a daemon, constantly monitoring specified NTP servers. The application reads a list of NTP servers from a configuration file, ‘ntp.conf', and periodically synchronises time. A list of NTP server references is specified with the ‘server' configuration command thus:

server time-a.nist.gov # NIST, Gaithersburg, Maryland NTP server
server time-c.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov # NIST, Boulder, Colorado NTP server

Once configured, the NTP daemon can be started, stopped and restarted using the commands: ‘ntpd start'; ‘ntpd stop' and ‘ntpd restart'.

Radio and GPS Clock Timing References

There are many commercially available radio and GPS clock timing references for PC's. Radio and GPS clocks obtain accurate time from national radio timing references or from the GPS system. The devices have serial or USB interfaces and provide an accurate timing reference to PC's. Driver software periodically synchronises the system time of the host computer to the received reference time. Often reference clock drivers are available that interface to the NTP application software to provide your own dedicated NTP server.

Radio time receivers often have the advantage of having the ability to obtain a good signal, indoors, close to the host computer. However, the signal can only be received locally to the transmitter. There are a number of radio time broadcasts available: MSF transmitted from Rugby, UK; DCF-77 transmitted from Frankfurt, Germany; WWVB transmitted from Colorado, USA; CHU, Canada and TDF, France. GPS has the advantage of providing a global time and frequency solution; however, an externally located antenna is required which can be impractical.

Dedicated NTP Servers

NTP servers are dedicated time servers that obtain time from an external source, such as radio or GPS, and provide a network with an accurate timing reference. NTP servers are generally rack-mountable devices with an external antenna and an Ethernet connection. The devices obtain time from a radio or GPS timing reference and maintain an accurate internal time. The accurate time is then distributed to network time clients over an IP network. Dedicated NTP servers often minimize the set-up and configuration effort required to get a NTP server installation up and running.

Who knows what way the wind will blow in years to come. You may be able to do without traffic from Google one day - just like you're probably doing without traffic from Hotbot right now.

However, you'll never be able to do without your clients and prospects. If you could you wouldn't be in business, would you?

So pay attention to what your audience wants to hear. If you configure your blog correctly in the first place, you won't have to worry about a good ranking so much.

2. Don't Add to the Noise.

It's okay to be silent for short periods if you have nothing interesting to say. In the meantime, while you're keeping your lips tight, find something *really* interesting to say.

Of course, I believe that there's never nothing to say. But I'm a writer and not everyone thinks that way.

After the first six to eight weeks, post every day if it suits you and you have words of interest. But after that, if you can sense that your posts aren't full bodied and home brewed, it really is fine to make us go without for a few. We'll live. We won't think so, but trust us, we will.

Just make sure you have something darn near-earth shattering to share when you get back, so we will all sit up and take note... and realize that we missed you.

3. When You Do Talk, Do It Loud and Proud

(Even if you find out later you were Loud and Wrong)

It's considered impolite to behave like a Rock Star when you're having a business dinner, even if you are one.

But guess what? When you're blogging, you aren't at a business dinner. That's not to say that you must indulge in Rock Star behavior if it doesn't suit you..

You don't even have to be *a* star. But you definitely want to be noticed, maybe referenced, and hopefully linked. A great way to do that is to be different. The most unique thing about you is You. Inject your personality in all that you do online.

So if you have news, share it. Heck, if you have gossip share it, just always, always, always, link to your suspicions or sources. On the rare occasion that a high-profile blogger's information is totally off-base, they print a retraction. So don't be afraid to suppose. Just let us know whether you are sharing a rumor, hunch, a fact or opinion.

4. Do Unto the Blogosphere, and Make It Easy for Them to Do Unto You

When I have credible sources, I link to them. Even if I read something from the Google Blog, but know when I first saw it first at Micropersuasion, I'm still linking to Micropersuasion. That's all there is to it.

(And let me tell you - it's a Huge deal when Steve Rubel links to an article that you wrote even when it's not posted on your site - think about that the next time you're tempted not to link out because "they have enough traffic.")

For the majority of people, I realize, that situation may never be in consideration. Most of the people reading this have nothing to do with search engines, public relations, or internet marketing.

Well, I'm here to tell you that even if your business is timeshare resales, you should still link to your sources. You never know who is reading and who is going to link back. Especially if you're in a business niche where twenty visitors eventually means at least one sale, find out what the neighborhood is like in your part of the Blogosphere, look around, and play nice with the other kids.

5. Blog Like You Talk - But if You Talk "Funny" Get Someone Else to Blog with You

Nothing will scare your visitors away faster than landing in techno-babble by accident. I landed at a friend's site about search engines, and the first paragraph I saw said something about (a+n) times the square root of pi and I clicked out before I even remembered why I went there.

Don't get me wrong - if that's how you talk, keep it real. But if that's not the language your clients speak, you might want to either have an employee represent your company in the blog, or do a team blog that represents all the prominent voices.

6. Give Every Subscription Option Under the Sun

Most people paying online are going to use their credit card or debit card, by far. How crazy would you have to be to say, hm, 90% of people use credit cards, but the hell with that. If they want my binoculars, their only choice is to send me a $20 check by snail mail on Tuesday mornings.

In this same way, refusing to turn on your site feed, because most people are currently following you by email, makes absolutely no sense. Refusing to start an email list or offer subscriptions to your blog headlines, summaries or posts via email is equally nuts, particularly now that there are tools in place that will translate feeds to email for you.

Not serving as much of your audience as you can is turning down money, plain and simple.

Hopefully these tips will help keep visitors coming back to your blog. It's like the old adage said, it's easier (and cheaper) to keep your present customers than it is to constantly find new ones.
